Dear Folks,

Welcome to our 2020 CSA season.  We are so glad that you will be part of our farm share for this year.  The year is starting slow.  I think that I say that every year, but this year has been particularly cold in the late spring.  On April 29 we had 32 degrees which was a shock, but it preparing us for May 8-9 when the temperatures went down to 27 degrees!

We quickly had to run out to the produce supply store and purchase $2000 worth of row cover to cover all the Early Glow strawberries (about 1 1/2 acres).  We also lost about one third of the first sugar cube melons that were already in the field and they were already double covered.

We lost a couple other items, but you have the idea.  Thankfully we always plant in successive crops so if there are not many of the first melons there will be another crop of them in two weeks.  We do all our plantings in this way.

So have a little patience and we will have abundance of many things.  We have a couple surprises in the shares this week, but I am only going to tell you about the definite SURE items that will be given this week.

broccoli

Lettuce mix

green onions

strawberries

rhubarb

Enjoy the rhubarb it is the last of the year.  Rhubarb had a shortened season because of the cold blast early in the month.

There will be a couple other things in the shares as well..so be surprised!

This year I will be writing emails more frequently than in the last couple years.  There are a lot of new folks in the CSA this year and I want you to have an idea of a few of the items to expect.  If you would rather not get the emails and just be surprised, just delete the email - unless I write URGENT in the subject line. then please read it.  If you unsubscribe from the mailing list you will be gone forever and never be in contact with us and we will not be able to get in touch with you if something happens.  It doesn't usually happen, but there have been a couple times when a truck broke down and could not make it to market.  We like to keep you informed.

If you have any questions about any fruits or vegetables that you get, please let me know.

NEW for THIS YEAR! - We are asking everyone to bring a bag or a box or a cooler or something to put your vegetables into to take home with you.  We would like to have all our boxes stay with us.  It seems like the safest way to handle our storage boxes is not to let them out of our sight.

If you do not think you should be on our CSA list for the first session, please let me know.

We are looking forward to a great year.  We are picking our first  strawberries!

See you on Saturday, June 6

at Fairfax Community Market and St Luke's Episcopal Church
